BALTIMORE-The Hampton University Lady Pirates basketball team shot a dismal 34 percent (9-26) from the free-throw line and committed 28 turnovers to subsequently fall to Morgan State University, 61-51 at Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md.
The Lady Pirates have now dropped two straight on the road to fall to 11-10 overall (7-5 MEAC), while the Lady Bears snap a three game losing skid to improve to 11-10 overall (6-5 MEAC).
MSU led by as many as seven in the first half before HU began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to one (20-19) with 4:41 on the clock. Nevertheless, consecutive lay-ups by Britney Griffin sent the Bears into the locker room at halftime with a five point advantage (24-19).
An Ashlee-Finley (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) lay-up opened the second half and sparked a 4-1 run by the blue and white giving them their first lead (25-23) since 17:21 in the first half. Both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes of play until a three-pointer by Corin Adams at 12:07 triggered a 6-0 run by the Bears as they held on to the led for good. The Lady Bears led by as many as 15 in the second stanza.
Junior guards Rachel Butler (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) and Artavia Burns (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) led the Pirates with 11 points apiece, while freshman Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va./Phoebus HS) added 10.
The Lady Bears were paced by freshman Corin Adams’ 15 points.
